Biodiversity discovery expedition to the Hindenburg Wall region, Papua New Guinea: Fishes, Frogs and Odonates (#237)
The heady days of early exploration saw adventures to remote parts of the world, leading to the first European observations of spectacular and sometimes bizarre animals. Surprisingly, there are still many regions of Australasia which are yet to be fully explored, and much remains to be discovered. In February 2013 scientists from MAGNT joined a Wildlife Conservation Society expedition to the Hindenburg Wall region of Papua New Guinea where around 80 news species of plants and animals were discovered! The presentation features some interesting, spectacular and unusual aquatic animals (including language names for fish), but more broadly shows what it is like to spend a month in remote tropical jungle working closely with local communities as part of a team contributing to biodiversity conservation.
