Robert ‘Bo’ Carne is an Aboriginal man with links to Bardi and Djabirr Djabirr tribes from the Dampier Peninsular, WA. Bo has 13 years’ experience working with NT Fisheries, managing the Fisheries Indigenous Development Unit. Bo developed and leads the implementation of the NT Indigenous Fishing Strategy 2012-14. This includes engaging Aboriginal sea rangers in fisheries compliance and research, and assisting Aboriginal people to enter into the seafood industry and greater engagement in fisheries management. Bo currently sits on the national Fisheries Research Development Corporation’s Indigenous Reference Group, the National Working Group for Indigenous Participation in Primary Industries, the Garngirr Fishing Aboriginal Corporation board, the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area committee and is Chairman for the Anindilyakwa and Maningrida Fisheries Committees. Bo was instrumental in the establishment of the Indigenous Fisheries Apprenticeship Program back in 2003 that continues today and has recruited over 18 apprentices since its inception. Bo sat on the FRDC Social Science Research Committee until 2012. In 2012, Bo undertook a visit to Canada and north America to look at First Nation peoples work in fisheries related businesses and resource management as part of his Indigenous Scholarship from FRDC. The final report was released in 2013.
